Herping

Herping is going out to look for reptiles and amphibians — and the best salamander hunting happens on wet nights, when they're out crossing the road. Take the wheel below: steer your headlight down the dark road and watch for the tiny eyeshine glint of an animal's eyes. Center your light on it and tap to stop and ID it. Below the game is a map of the real reptiles and amphibians I've logged on iNaturalist.

Move your headlight beam (mouse, or drag on touch) down the dark road. Watch for a tiny eyeshine glint — that's an animal's eyes catching the light. Steer onto it and tap to stop and ID it. Please never handle real salamanders with bug-sprayed or lotioned hands, and put any cover you flip back the way you found it.

My reptiles & amphibians, mapped

Every reptile and amphibian I've logged on iNaturalist, heat-mapped by where I found them. Toggle reptiles vs. amphibians, then tap a country (or the US, then a state) to zoom in and see each observation.
