This site has no cookies and no ads. Here's what it does keep, and what I do with it.
Messages
When you send me a message, the form passes along your name, email address and message, plus the time you sent it. I only use them to reply, and to arrange a print if it comes to that. Nobody else gets them, and you won't end up on a mailing list.
Messages are kept in my own Microsoft Azure account, on servers in the US. They stay there until I delete them. Ask through the form if you'd like yours gone and I'll take care of it.
The form also counts how many messages come from one connection each hour, to keep spam down. It does that with a scrambled code made from your IP address, so the address itself is never saved.
Visit counts
Each page you open is noted, along with how long you stayed on it. If another site sent you here, its name is saved too (google.com, say, never the full link).
Visitors are counted without the site knowing who they are. It mixes your IP address and browser with the date and a secret key, then keeps only the scrambled result. That code changes every day, so visits on different days can't be linked. Your IP address is never stored.
On your device
Your light or dark setting is saved in your browser, and so is your progress on the hobby pages, like the tide pool critters you've found. None of it leaves your device, and clearing this site's data in your browser wipes it.
While a tab is open, it also holds a random code that matches each page view with how long it lasted. Closing the tab clears it.
The selfie to bird generator reads your photo right on your device. It's never uploaded.
Other sites
The site runs on Microsoft Azure, and their servers handle every request, like any web host.
Some hobby pages load photos and sightings straight from iNaturalist. When they do, your browser connects to iNaturalist, which sees your IP address like any site you visit.
Nothing here follows you around other sites, and no one else gets to either. Visit counts work the same whether or not your browser sends Do Not Track. I don't sell or pass on anything about you.
